January 23rd, 2010 8 am – 1 pm O'Neill Regional Park

Jon Young PhotoThe passing of every animal leaves its mark not only through tracks, but through the call of the birds. Every skilled tracker understands, you know the Cougar not through its prints, but through a crash of Wren and Sparrow alarms cutting through the forest like an arrow. You give the Bear berth from a wave of ground birds complaining as it lumbers through the woods. And you catch the sneaking Deer by a single Stellars Jay, offended and confused, cursing the Buck's slow crouch and crawl.

This is a workshop of observation, storytelling, lore and wisdom for the birder, naturalist, mentor, teacher, parent and anyone wishing to understand the ebb and flow of the natural world through incredible competencies of the native tracker.

Through a combination of lecture, storytelling, and outdoor activities, participants will learn to reconnect to pathways of learning in themselves and others.

Morning will be spent in the field, tracking and observing. We will have lunch together then move indoors for conversation and lecture. Please dress appropriately for the weather. Bring a pen and notepad, water and lunch for the day. More information on Jon Young: www.jonyoung.org

Earthroots is a non-profit education organization, offering creative learning environments that nurture the whole person and their connection with the natural world.

We offer classes year round for toddlers, homeschoolers, teens, adults, private and public schools and summer camps. Local organic farms, gardens, wilderness parks, green kitchens, beaches, creeks are our outdoor classrooms. This school is an exploration of our natural world and extends into our connection with all things. Orange County programs meet at new locations each week, ranging from San Clemente to Huntington Beach and east into the Santa Ana Mountains. Each year, we also travel out of our region for family camping trips & adventure.

Subscribe to our monthly E-Newsletter for upcoming classes, community events and earth-connecting activities you can share with your family and friends at home!

We build trust and confidence through adventurous challenges and by enjoying the peaceful abundance of the natural world. Some of our favorite seasonal projects include starting, growing and eating from our garden; harvesting acorns, making traditional Native American instruments and crafts; weaving with natural fibers; identifying marine tidepool creatures; milking goats, making goat milk ice cream; identifying and eating edible plants in our neighborhoods and local wilderness areas; following and identifying animal tracks; learning bird calls; building with natural materials, creating a journal documenting our discoveries; and finding places to be quiet in nature.

We adapt our classes to the interests of our students and allow the spontaneity of the day to guide us. Small groups allow for a deeper and more powerful experiences in nature. For the children's classes, parents are welcome to participate or to drop off. In most situations, younger siblings may accompany parents during class.

We invite you to browse our site and we welcome questions and comments!

About http://ochomeschooling.com/earthroots/our-teachers/ Sat, 26 Jan 2008 00:38:15 +0000 http://ochomeschooling.com/earthroots/our-teachers/ Earthroots Field School grew out of a community need for environmentally progressive & conscious, enriching, outdoor, hands-on classes for children and adults in southern Orange County, California. Co-created in 2004 by a small, dedicated group of homeschool families and guided by Jodi Levine, Earthroots Field School has taken root and now serves over eighty families and many private and charter schools in Southern California each season. Earthroots is incorporated as a 501(c) 3 and welcomes leads on applicable grants to enhance our programs and outreach.

Jodi Levine - Executive Director

Jodi has been living and teaching experientially-based environmental education for the past 11 years. Her teaching style incorporates outdoor, hands-on activities that awaken a sense of connection and stewardship between children and the natural world. Her community building skills create the feeling of a small village within Earthroots programs. Read more about Jodi Levine...

Evan Brown - Instructor

Evan has been working with Earthroots for over two years and has inspired countless children on and off trail to engage with the earth in a gentle and profound way. He will be teaching “Plants: Our Breath & Body” and co-teaching Weekly Homeschool Field Classes this season.

Caroline Colesworthy - Instructor

Caroline was born in Newport Beach and attended Orange Coast College, UC Berkeley and Brown University, receiving a BA in English Literature and an MA in Environmental Studies, respectively. After involvement in politics she decided to come back home and get as "far upstream" as she could manage: connecting children securely to Nature so that they might consider it in all they do. She has been teaching Earthroots' youngest participants since Fall 2009. When she is not leading Earthroots classes she works as the lead Garden Instructor for Anneliese's Schools and is mom to Izzy, 2 years old, and partner to Greg, also of Earthroots.

Meg Hiesinger - Instructor

Meg assists with Journey After School program and two days of weekly Homeschooling classes, Tuesday and Wednesday. Meg received her undergraduate degree in cultural anthropology from University of California at Berkeley and has a doctorate in the History of Science, Technology, and Society from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She has designed and taught an original interdisciplinary “Farm-to-School Table” curriculum with a grant from SEEDS Arts and Education and teaches classes for children and adults on cooking from the garden, nutrition, food preservation, and preparing food-allergy friendly healthy cuisine. Meg deeply committed to teaching about nutrition, ecology, and other subjects through hands-on, interdisciplinary programs in the garden and in nature and is excited to work for Earthroots to develop some new avenues for this kind of learning in southern California.

Greg Johansen

Greg is the lead instructor for the After School Ecology Club program at Tustin Memorial Academy.
Deanna Moore Deanna cob bench SCF

Permaculutre Design Instructor and creator of Chocolatl, Deanna offers her passion for sustainable living, West African Dance & Drum, Whole Food Cooking, cobbing skills and curriculum design to Earthroots Field School. Her teaching is often invisible and profound.

Co-created in 2004 by a small, dedicated group of homeschool families and guided by Jodi Levine, Earthroots Field School has taken root and now serves over one hundred families and many private and charter schools in Southern California each year.

My hope is that we will protect these gifts along with the knowledge to make them worthwhile for generations to come. I am devoted to these values and enjoy living them. As an Orange County native, I cherish my roots here... and having traveled the world and learned from cultures outside of our own, I see where we can improve upon our relationship with the land and each other. I am passionate about seeking education for myself on progressive energy alternatives, ways to replenish the soil with water, ways to build tightly woven interdependent webs of community, ensuring our children are accepted for who they are and are treated with respect. I love music and am creating a CD this year!

This parent and child class is all about getting into the soil, and having fun. Weekly classes meet at different organic farms, wilderness parks and the ocean to discover the sights, sounds, textures and joy of the natural world.

Our toddlers program is ideal for children age 2 to 3, yet some younger and older children have had lots of fun over the years, so we welcome all young children with parents or other responsible guardian. We meet weekly to explore the earth and play in nature. A recent class met at a local garden. We harvested mulberries, ate and painted with them, planted four varieties of sunflowers in pots to take home and care for, transplanted cantelope starts in the earth then WATERED everything : ) Each class meets at a new location with different themes and activities. We encourage everyone to wear clothing that can get earthy. Children who are are able to walk get more out of the class than crawlers, although we invite everyone to join in. We no longer offer make up classes for missed classes in this series. Taught by Caroline Colesworthy, Earthroots Field School Instructor

Drop in fee is $25 per class per child per class and MUST BE SCHEDULED in advance. This class will be full at 10 participants. Drop in participants welcome only when space is available, please call for details. Acorns can be found beneath southern California Oak trees in the mid to late fall. Generally November/December is the perfect time to gather acorns. Remember to harvest only what you need and leave the rest for the animals who depend on acorns as their food source.

Our local Acorns contain tannic acid that must be leached before eating. (Tannic acid causes stomach aches.) Directions for LEACHING acorns: Crack and open the acorns and remove the nuts. Grind the nuts (by hand or in the blender) to a fine meal. Place the finely ground nuts in the center of a towel sitting in a strainer. Place the strainer with towel and nuts under the faucet and rinse with a slow, steady stream of water, stopping occasionally to squeeze the towel and observe the color of outflow. It will start out milky white and change until clear. When clear, the tannic acids are leached, and it is ready to eat! This may take up to 30 minutes or more depending on the type of acorns. *There are many leaching techniques, and recipes for using acorns. To satiate your curiosity, check out http://siouxme.com/acorn.html http://www.edibleplants.com/month/wepmonth.htm

Acorn Pancakes (original Earthroots Recipe)

1 cup mashed acorns or acorn flour 1 cup of your favorite flour (corn, amaranth, wheat, garbanzo bean, rice etc) 1 tsp salt 2 tsp baking powder 2 eggs (vegan option: ½ tsp flax meal + 2 tbsp water) ¼ cup oil or ghee ½ cup honey 2 cups water or milk

1. Mix dry ingredients first. 2. Add wet ingredients and mix together thoroughly (Note: the secret of keeping pancake batter from getting lumpy is to be sure to add all the wet ingredients before mixing.) 3. Adjust consistency by adding a little more water/milk or a little more flour if it’s too thick or thin. Pancake batter should be thin enough to pour, but not runny. 4. Cook on oiled grill. 5. Top with Maple Syrup or prickly pear jam ]]>

Hosted by the Holistic Mom's Club
Join Jodi for stories and a slide show of earth-connecting
activities you can create with your family, modeled after Earthroots Field School
classes. These earth play lessons engage children with as many senses as possible:
touch, taste, movement, scent, hearing, vision and imagination.
Explore the natural world together, learning to create a life that honors the Earth
and the web that interconnects us all. Jodi models sustainable living skills
in a fun way and encourages students to seek the best choices in their own lives
to create a healthy future for us all. Her car runs on recycled vegetable oil and her home
landscape features a rain garden planted with native plants and reuses grey
water in the garden. Each participant will leave with inspiration and a packet
of California Native Wildflower Seeds to plant at home.

Jodi Levine has been living and teaching experientially based environmental
education for the past 10 years, locally and abroad. Jodi is the founder and
director of Earthroots Field School. Earthroots was initiated by a small,
dedicated group of home school families and guided by Jodi Levine. Earthroots
Field School has taken root and now serves over eighty families and many
private schools annually with educational field trips focused on Wilderness
Awareness, Ecological Gardening, Natural Building, Tidepooling, Natural Crafts
and Whole Food Cooking. Her program grew out of a community need for
environmentally conscious, enriching, outdoor, hands-on classes for young
children in southern Orange County.

Build an Authentic Ki-che at Irvine Park
Date: Sunday, March 15, 2009
Time: 10am-5pm, Lunch will be provided, bring snacks if you like
Location: Irvine Regional Park
In this hands on workshop, participants will learn about many indigenous building styles around North America, then help to build a ki-che style home used by the native Tongva and Acjachemen peoples of present day Orange County.
We will use willow, tule, and cattail, the authentic materials used by the Tongva and Acjachemen people. The ki-che is a dome shaped structure with a cattail and tule roof and walls. The full-sized ki-che that we build will be used as a functioning educational model for thousands of students at the Outdoor Education Center at Irvine Park.
The class will be led by Mark Hay, the Lead Instructor for Earthroots Field School, who has a bachelors in history with an emphasis on indigenous peoples of the Western United States. We will also have native California guest instructors.

Building a tule canoe using the methods of the local indigenous people.
This tule canoe was built with locally harvested tule and plant fiber twine.
We used approx 600 feet of rope and twine made from jute and agave (agave sisalana). For the native people of California, the processing of plants and making of the string to build a canoe like this would have been the most time consuming part of the process. Rope and string (or cordage) was and still is one of the most important resources in indigenous cultures around the world. Plant fibers hand spun into rope and string literally hold human lives together.

Ages 6 -14

If your child loves to build forts, make things with their hands, explore creeks and woods, and play outdoors they will love Native Skills Camp.

While the kids are playing, building, and working together on projects they will be immersed in the stories and knowledge of local natural history, California indigenous people, and our shared ancestral human struggles and histories. The kids will be meeting their basic human needs of shelter, water, fire, and food in fun and practical ways. Along the way they will be learning how to see the natural world and their relationship to it in a more meaningful and more direct way.

About the Nevada City Camp Director:

Xylem Larla Dey is young at heart- a dancer, yogini, musician, theater artist, avid gardener, aspiring herbalist, and earth educator. Xylem started facilitating groups of children when she apprenticed Fran, a New Jersey childrens' librarian, from 1991-1995. More recently, Xylem developed curriculum for the non-profit earth education organization Common Vision from 2003-2008, and spent 4 years on Fruit Tree Tour: planting fruit trees at schools with thousands of children throughout California. She has a BA in theater & educational reform from Sarah Lawrence College in NY (2001). She taught at schools in rural Maine, suburban Yonkers, and in the South Bronx- creating creative lesson plans for diverse situations. She got the botanical nickname 'Xylem' while treesitting in Oregon, and it transitioned her into learning to grow food in Southern California. In '03-'05 Xylem volunteered on the Pomona Organic Farm, earned a Devi Yoga teacher certification, taught kids' yoga and creative dance, and worked as a homeschool preschool teacher for 5 families (excellent references). She has homebased in Nevada City since 2005, travelling to Peru and India. She is now a teacher at Shuniaa Yoga Studio, and an apprentice to herbalist Kathi Keville.

If you would like to speak with a parent from our Weekly Homeschool Program, Afternoon Adventures, Summer Camp, or Toddlers in the Garden classes, please let me know. Jodi Levine (949) 400-3340 P.S. This link takes you a yelp review of our Toddlers in the Garden class. -- I believe the program [Homeschool Field Program] is teaching Tommy to be a caring and responsible individual to all living things and to do his part in keeping our environment clean. -S. Schimke, June 2009 -- I really liked the discovering of new places and the fact that Liam had positive outdoor experiences relating to nature and the interaction with other children. I particularly like ... Jodi's positive influence on the entire program. It's been a pleasure to observe and be a part of. -K. Penkethman June 2009 -- Molly LOVED the classes!!!!!!!!!! THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -D. Gardner, June 2009 -- 1/23/09 Hi Jodi – I wanted to let you know that Earthroots is making a big difference in our lives. Brian is responding so well to the experiential learning. He loves being outdoors and enjoys all the hands on activities. I have watched him bring home rocks from Earthroots and sort them by color, add, subtract and divide them. It is amazing. Just one day a week at Earthroots has allowed him to “connect the dots” on all his other learning experiences. Keep up the good work. Best, T. Sheets -- 1/22/09 Jodi, Tal benefits so much from his time with you and Mark -- I will do whatever I can to keep bringing him! - P. Finger -- Afternoon Adventures at the Levine Family Farm 10/28/2008 Hi Jodi, Just wanted to say thank you for the Afternoon Adventures class. My son really enjoyed the different experiences he had over the session and I'm happy that he had an opportunity to do all the neat things he did. I also wanted to say that I appreciated the way that you handled behavior issues over the weeks whenever he was difficult or challenging. Not everyone has the patience or the skill. Some get overwhelmed by him. But you were able to keep your calm and maintain control of the situation. You're doing a great job and I wish you well. Take care, T. Bumbesti -- 1/28/08 We will miss seeing you too. Crazy how busy our life is getting with both kids having things they want to do and HAVE to do. Thanks for all you do Jodi. You really are quite a talented teacher. A. Collins -- 12/05/07 Hi Jodi Thanks for your time and sharing with the kids. They have enjoyed their time at Earthroots and exploring with you! It would be nice to have the option of returning if the opportunity arises for us. We wish you the very best. Enjoy the holiday season! Thanks, T. Gallagher -- 11/07 Jodi, I loved the tape [Jon Young Coyote Mentoring]. (Thank you for letting me keep it.) Can you recommend any reading along the same lines? I remember that you and Mark both had a couple of books that you brought along w/ you on the parents' night. Of course, I don't remember the titles :) Something w/ a specific homeschooling bent would be perfect. I really like all of the concepts, especially the "invisible classroom," and the idea of a rich, sensory educational environment. I'm so happy that Earthroots provides that for my girls. Lavender -- 1/12/06 Hi Jodi …thank you for today's class … we all had a really good time. … I have been wanting to take the girls on hikes ever since they were born, but it is just kind of hard/intimidating when you are on your own. I think having other kids around kept both girls going and feeling more easy about things. Also, I don't think we could have ever done the "silent walk" parts on our own, so that was a bonus. We are all looking forward to next week! Thanks again. Nancy & crew -- 3/25/05 Dear Jodi, I just wanted to thank you again for providing such a wonderful opportunity for kids to learn and appreciate the beauties of nature, an opportunity that not many children have the benefit of experiencing around here...we look so forward to taking part in the hiking classes too! ...thanks again sincerely S. Mohammed -- 1/13/05 South Laguna Village Garden Hi Jodi; Just wanted to take a minute to thank you for providing my son such a wonderful experience today. He could not stop talking about what a delightful place the garden was as well as all the cool things you guys talked about. While we were there he showed me the worm compost, told me more about the fairies that live at the garden, about the luscious carrots you guys picked..."Mom, they were the best carrots I've ever had!!!". Thank you for sharing your passion with my son, and for touching his soul in such a kind way. Needless to say, he can't wait to come to the next class. And yes, he wants to come to the candle making class. So, we'll see you next week. Thanks again, M. Brillhart -- 4/13/2004 Jodi, Thanks for a great field trip! The girls said it was the best field trip ever and they can't wait to do it again. Noelle even wants to build a beach in our backyard! Info on Quail Springs: www.quailsprings.org
The Evolving Story and History of Quail Springs Quail Springs is on a 450 acre piece of land located in the Santa Barbara backcountry in the Pinyon-Juniper woodlands of the upper Cuyama Valley. This land is situated at the base of Mt. Pinyos and Mt. Abel, the "sister" mountains that have been the center of the universe for the Chumash people for thousands of years. The spring here that gives the site its name, offers life to myriad species of plants and animals and allows us as people to share on this land. In 1997, Warren Brush and Cynthia Harvan began a program for homeless youth, called Wilderness Youth Project, out of a homeless shelter for families in Santa Barbara, California. Each year, Wilderness Youth Project spent many a day in the Cuyama Valley tracking animals, building shelters, learning about earth skills, tending fires, mentoring and sharing stories that would support the healthy growth of youth, with diverse cultural, ethnic, and socio-economic backgrounds.
In 2004, an ideal site that was a former cattle ranch was secured through the generosity of a local Santa Barbara family foundation. Warren and Cyndi moved to the land to lead the caretaking and development of Quail Springs and the subsequent birth of a new non profit organization, called True Nature, which is now a sister organization to Wilderness Youth Project. Quail Springs is dedicated to the multi-generational learning journey of seeding and tending the gardens of human land based culture. Our work is hands-on and experiential in nature and is based on long term relationship building and nurturing this permaculture farm into fruition. We strive to learn the languages of the land and one another so we know how to live in accordance with the infinitely diverse web of ecology and its vitality through many generations. We believe that we must no longer starve our grandchildren to feed our children.

with Jon Young, founder of the Wilderness Awareness School
