Heidi Lucero, Chairwoman of the Juañeno Band of Mission Indians Acjachemen Nation and board member for Earthroots Field School, along with Ellen Sue Schneider, Basket weaving Committee Director from the Juaneño Band of Mission Indians, Acjachemen Nation, will lead a basket making workshop at Big Oak Canyon. Ellen Sue and Heidi will share stories, lead a discussion on the value of native plants, give a tour of the Basket Garden at Big Oak Canyon, and teach participants how to weave a round reed basket.
“The marvel of a basket is in its transformation, its journey from wholeness as a living plant to fragmented strands and back to wholeness again as a basket. A basket knows the dual powers of destruction and creation that shape the world. Strands once separated are rewoven into a new whole. The journey of a basket is also the journey of a people.”
― Robin Wall Kimmerer, Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants
This workshop will be hosted in partnership with Earthroots Field School at Big Oak Canyon, located on ancestral lands of the Juañeno Band of Mission Indians Acjachemen Nation and neighboring Tongva/Gabrieleño and Luiseño tribes in the area known as Silverado Canyon.
In this workshop, Ellen Sue and Heidi will instruct us in how to weave small gathering baskets made of rattan reed. These beginner baskets are a great way to learn the techniques of weaving with earth materials.
Beyond these baskets to take home, Ellen Sue and Heidi will talk about the methods for other types of local basket making- like baskets composed of juncus textilis or sumac, pine needles, yucca, and deer grass.
