Class Description
Enjoy the art of loom beadwork in this day-long workshop. Spend the day at Big Oak Canyon working with seed beads on a beautifully crafted, hand-made loom. Loom beadwork can be used to create bracelets, hat bands, or patches to adorn a hat or bag. We will be working with intricate designs and beads to craft a piece of beadwork of your creation!
Lylah’s knowledge of beadwork was passed to her from her mother who learned while living on the Navajo reservation in Northern Arizona. The detail and time it takes to make this work is a true act of patience. The designs traditionally tell a story, integrating the lives of people in the work.

About the Instructor
Lylah Javis
Seasonal Instructor | Artist
Lylah Antares Jarvis grew up in a small town on the Navajo Reservation and on 40 acres in the mountains in Colorado. Her memories of her childhood, her connection to the Navajo culture, the land, and relationships to her family and friends inspire so much of her artwork. Having spent her Junior year of high school in New Zealand, college in Maine and then finishing in her hometown, Durango, Colorado, Lylah learned to incorporate her life experience into her work. With a BA in drawing and printmaking from Fort Lewis College, Lylah laid the foundation for her design which influences her work in blown glass, beadwork, and textile arts. Lylah appreciates the control, skill, and discipline required in the field fine art as well as the freedom and playful creativity that her art has become.
She also teaches art with children and finds joy in balancing the creative and the technical aspects of creating work. Her inspiration and ideas are greatly influenced by her deep connection to nature, the cultures she grew up with and by her close friends and family.
