“My son has an ever-surprising growing knowledge of our world and its co-inhabitants. Wonderful educational value.”Homeschool Parent
Earthroots in-person Homeschool Field Classes meet once a week at various locations throughout Orange County. Experiences may include: hiking to a natural hot spring to study geology, tide-pooling along the coast, fishing, tracking animals, learning about watershed health and the water cycle, rainwater harvesting, native plant identification and uses for making tools and shelter, growing food organically, and cooking in the sun oven and over the fire. We eat what we grow and learn how our individual actions impact the world around us.
The program locations and schedule are designed to showcase the beauty of Orange County and unique seasonal discoveries of our region. There are no “typical days” as the lessons fluctuate to meet the interest of the students present each day along with the spontaneous discoveries at each location. As an example, finding an octopus at the tide pools or animal tracks on the trail often guide the lessons. The rhythms of a day include morning circle, snack, exploration, lunch, journaling, quiet sit, and closing circle.
Throughout the semester and over the course of many semesters, our participants develop strong bonds with each other and grow into a wonderful community. Participants learn how to help one another, model care and kindness for each other and the world around us, as well as build deep friendships that continue outside of our class time.
As participants gain experience, knowledge, and care for our earth, they are able to share their outdoor skills and nature awareness with family and friends. Homeschool class graduates are often empowered to successfully lead their loved ones on journeys that were inspired by their time with Earthroots.
Each week we explore themes of Wilderness Awareness, Ecological Gardening, Natural Building, Natural Crafts, and Whole Food Cooking through hands-on, outdoor activities.
We recommend parents read Coyote’s Guide to Connecting with Nature by Jon Young to get an inside glimpse of Earthroots mentoring philosophies.
Children ages 6-14 years old.
We strive to maintain a ratio of no more than 7 students to 1 Earthroots Mentor.
